Longboard Burgers

Friday, January 16th, 2009

img_9086-1Longboard Burgers, locally operated, family owned and “In & Out” stlyed burgers, is located at 356 Appleway @ 4th st. in the A & D mini-mart.

Three year owner Janna Kender, has always had a passion for making burgers for the community. Kender, who once owned The Trophy Supper Club located up in Hayden Lake, moved onto her true vision.

Years prior, Janna and her family, grew quite tired driving hundreds of miles to the all time famous In & Out Burgers in California. So, they put there heads together, and decided to bring that taste to the North Idaho region.

img_9087-1Because of the increase of popularity of this community, Kender has decided with her manager to extend operating hours to nights. So, she can continuely grow her customer basis. The future hope for this year is to open another store in the Hayden Lake region, to provide that area with the flavor of their fabulous burgers.

The customers that come into this gas station heading to Longboard, come mainly for the Double-Double Combo Burger. The most popular burger on the menu, has made them famous in the local area.

This dine-in, drive-thru burger hot spot, can be reached by telephone at (208)666-1952.

The entire line of all natural dry olives, have a delightful taste, that rings true for North Idaho’s homegrown products.  One of the most popular sellers, is the Blood Orange oil. Its orange tenge, displays an elegant imiating display.

Many olive oils have I tried, and all fall short when you have some Cd’A’s own olive oil. I have had the italian finest oils, and they are not even able to simulate the comparison, of how unreal these fine gourmet oils taste.

A Coeur d’Alene must visit spot, is just around from the Sum of 6, studio art gallery. Which provides a unrivaled art selection not seen since Seattle art galleries.

Bistro on Spruce

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

img_9042-1 The Bistro on Spruce located at 1710 N. Fourth, here in town, is a great family resturant. There Chef Everett Fees always has something new and exciting planned for the evenings dinner.

One of specialties served at the bistro, is the Spicy Plum Duck Breast. This pan seared, basted and then finally roasted duck, is served ever so elegantly with a spicy Asian plum varnish, bubbling over with calrose, sauteed with garlic, shallot and soy.

This fine establishment, servers a smorgousboard of wines, both imported and national. With a group conference room, able to be rented out for meetings, this super club atmosphere gives the customer the impression of a european dining.

The bistro caters for a great variety of events, as well as dines in house.  This relaxed enviroment is great for wine tasting events, private parties, and other events.

The Talus Pinot Noir, red wine hailing from France, has a fruity smooth flavor, much desired by wine tasters abroad. Come in to this resturant and encounter what the chef has to offer.

The rating i would give for Coeur d’Alene’s rating dining, a four out of five stars.

Coeur d'Alene Brewery Co.

img_8998-1North Idaho is the land of huckleberries. I mean real huckleberries. I grew up in the Seattle area around beautiful hills and mountains full of amazing pine forests. In these forests we had these tall bushes with little red dots on them. Those dots we called huckleberries. The huckleberries were always sour and you could probably pick them your whole life and never have enough for a whole pie. When I moved to North Idaho, I was amazed when someone showed me a REAL huckleberry! I mean, these huckleberries are as big as blueberries and are juicy!

In this land of huckleberries I have found that people put huckleberries in just about everything and sell it. Things like pies, jams, chocolate, tobacco… I’ve even seem some girls use it as eyeliner and hair dye. Anyways, it only makes sense that someone would make beer out of the stuff. Coeur d Alene Brewing Company did that and it has become a favorite to many. Seriously, at least 5 people like the stuff and probably more. This beer is pretty amazing and is served best on tap at the CDA Brewery. You can also buy the Huckleberry beer at the Brewery, and other places around town and take it home with you. Definitely serve it cold, dont serve it warm.

As for the Coeur d Alene Brewery itself, they have other great beers and their food is not that bad either. The CDA Brewery has a nice hometown, family pub atmosphere.

Anyways, the Huckleberry Beer…go get it!

San Francisco Sourdough

img_8958-1
San Francisco Sourdough is located on the south side of Sherman between 3rd & 4th St. in Coeur d’Alene. This authentic San Fran styled sandwich Shop, has even the décor down pat. The nice warmth of the oven, great sandwich, and wonderful smiling face, is hits the spot.

One of there most popular sandwiches sold at this fine establishment, is the garlic pesto turkey “#13” sandwich. It is as zesty as it Sounds, no doubt in mind.

This chain of restaurants, two of which in the Coeur d’Alene area, are a great reminder of the old San Francisco years prior.

When visiting, you will encounter a journey down memory lane, as well as one of Coeur d’Alene’s best sandwiches in town. I would rate this restaurant a four out of five stars.

Michael D's Eatery in Coeur d Alene

Monday, December 8th, 2008

In my opinion there is not a whole lot to choose from as far as breakfast food is concerned. I had been meeting with a group of guys on Thursday mornings for the last year at Denny’s, and it was making us sick. I got to the point where I not only felt like I was sick, but that I needed to sleep for the rest of the day after getting out of Denny’s. Even their oatmeal made me feel like I had drank a quart of oil.

Anyways, after about a month of begging the other guys to have us meet somewhere else for breakfast. I finally convinced them to have us meet at Michael D’s one morning. What a difference! The food was actually good! The impression that I got was that it was not just thrown into a microwave, but actually prepared like you would at home. The portions were big, and I felt refreshed after my breakfast there. Michael D’s is highly recommended.

Milltown Grill in Post Falls

Monday, December 8th, 2008

My beautiful wife and I went to the Milltown Grill in Post Falls, Idaho this morning. My wife and I both enjoyed it. At first I was not sure, but my wife especially enjoyed the layed back aspect of it. The people there were very curteous and we received good service. At first when I was looking at the menu, I was expecting Denny’s food proportions. I was wrong. The food proportions were great, and the food was delicious. We highly recommend checking it out.

Bella Rose Coffee House

I love how many coffee shop’s are in my cozy town of Coeur d Alene. Whenever I go to other cities, I have a hard time finding a coffee shop besides Starbucks. I might just not know where they are, but in my town, there are coffee shops on the main drags. The other day I was in Spokane Valley going up and down Sprague Ave looking for a coffee shop to work in. Isnt it Sprague Ave the street that has more restaurants on it than any other street in the world?! And yet there is not a single Coffee Shop. I had to settle for starbucks.

Today I am at Bella Rose, one of the cutest little coffee shops in downtown CDA. They have really good drinks, panini sandwiches and baked goods. I just finished off one of their amazing panini sandwiches. The Turkey Pesto Panini to be exact. It was, as I said before, amazing. However, they really lacked on the chips. I needed just a few more chips. They only give you Tim’s Ultra Super Tiny bag of chips which comes with about 3 chips total. I think they could probably save money by buying the chips in a big bag from SafeWay, and then placing 3 of those chips on your plate.

Bella Rose is not really the best place for people like me, whose sole reason for buying their food is to syphon their internet. They have really good internet, but there are no outlets to plugin your laptop (or desktop if you actually pack your desktop around town). If you need to work on the fly, Bella Rose is the perfect spot. Fast Service and great atmosphere.

Bella Rose is located across the street from Tito Macoroni’s on Sherman Avenue.

Hudsons Hamburgers

img_8990-1

Lately I have been having a hard time eating anything that is not grilled. Not sure what my problem is exactly. Maybe I have just spent too many years eating boring sandwiches with “lunch meat”. Or, maybe its because with my recent work schedule I have a hard time breaking for lunch before 2PM, which is obviously past lunch time, which is obviously past the time in which a normal person would eat “lunch meat”. Anyways, anymore when I’m downtown, and my tummy is a-grumblin’, I must have a Calypsos’ Iliad, or a Hudsons Hamburger. Hudsons Hamburgers is the Coeur d Alene Food place that we will be reviewing today.

Hudsons Hamburgers is more than just a Food Place, its more like an epic adventure. You never know when the line to get in Hudsons will be backed up to I-90, or when you will catch the perfect moment in which when you go, a seat is waiting for you. Today was one of the rare occasions in which the seat was waiting for me. It rained this last weekend, and I guess that scared all of the tourists home. It was just 5 days ago that I had to wait at least 30 minutes for a mouth watering Hudsons Hamburger. Ok, back to today. Actually, I need to say one more thing first. When I mentioned that I had to wait 30 minutes, I should have mentioned that it was an honor. Waiting 30 minutes for a Hudsons Hamburger is an honor, and a priviledge. I am honored to live  in the same town that grows the best Hamburgers in the world. Ones that are worth waiting any amount of time for.

Ok, back to where I was. I walked in today and immediately found a chair. I sat next to 2 very nice ladies that were there for the first time. One was from Spokane other was from…back east. They had both read about Hudsons for the first time the previous week and decided to check it out. They were both completely satisfied after splitting just one Cheeseburger which is never enough for me. Hudsons had met every expectation they had, so they went after a piece of Hudsons Pie.

I had a Double Cheeseburger, and a Single Cheeseburger with Ketchup, secret sauce, pickles and onions. Amazing. The burger must be made from really high quality meat, because it is unlike any other burger I have ever had. If I remember right, they dont freeze their meat. They just use it.

Hudsons does not offer fries. Sounds crazy since everyone offers fries with their burgers. But Hudsons does not need to. They do one thing, and one thing very well. They make good burgers. After having one of their burgers, you dont need fries.

After I leave Hudsons, I always feel really really good. Ready to take on the rest of the day and the tasks in front of me.

Go try them out. I guarantee that if you are not 100% more productive after having a Hudsons Hamburger, I will give you back all of the money we charged you to read this article.

A&W Root Beer in Hayden

Monday, September 1st, 2008

It was a hot summer day. I had been working hard outside and thought I deserved a burger and an A&W Root Beer float (BTW, A&W Root Beer is the only way you can have a Root Beer float). I went to the A&W, located in the Hayden Holiday Gas Station on Prairie Ave. As I walked up to the counter, I could see the lady running the place in the back of the room. She was standing on the grill, swatting at flies, meanwhile unloading years of dust and dead bugs all over the food counter and the grill.

I dont quite remember what happened after that. I dont remember if I left. I dont remember if I passed out and woke up the next day in my nice warm safe bed away from the bug swatting dust lady. I dont remember if I stayed, and foolishly just ate whatever was put in front of me. All I know is this… dont go to the A&W Root Beer in Hayden at the Holiday Gas Station. Dont do it for 2 reasons:

  1. Obviously their cleanliness standards are WAY behind.
  2. They are no longer open. So, they would not be there if you went anyways. I wonder why?
